Apprentices were the future of every clan. Eventually, all the warriors would die, and their apprentices would be the ones running the clan. It was an important job, perhaps one of the most important, to train an apprentice well.
Frankly, Rainfall felt a little intimidated. No, not a little intimidated, just flat out intimidated. And Fleapaw wasn't an easy kit to work with. They didn't blame her, though. Everyone had their strengths and learning process. She was a young kit, always getting into trouble. Rainfall felt bad when they had to scold her, which was often. Being a mentor sure was a lot of hard work. But they would stick it out and put out their best effort, because Fleapaw was sure trying her best.
They'd agreed to meet Foxstar and Dovepaw with Fleapaw at the usual place for a bit of training. Rainfall wasn't sure what kind of training, it hadn't been discussed. They hadn't been able to find Fleapaw in camp. They'd told her to show up around sunhigh, and were relying on her to be on time. Possibly a mistake, but Rainfall was holding faith, at least until Foxstar and Dovepaw were ready. The dirt clearing was just ahead. They stepped into it, scanning to see if anyone had arrived.

Fleapaw was in a full sprint now, hopefully heading on the right path. By accident, one of her favorite "hide-and-sneak" games had gone on for too long, and now she was frantic to make it to the clearing on time. The idea of narrating to herself suddenly seemed like the worst thing any cat could come up with.
Out of sheer luck, Fleapaw managed to catch sight of the place she should have been at long ago. Feeling a little relieved, the apprentice slowed down, but was still terrified at what they thought of her being this late. Fleapaw expected them to be waiting for her with the hardest scowls they could muster, and frankly, she wasn't ready to face it at all. Even a gigantic fire was more inviting to her than this.
When she reached her mentor, Fleapaw came to an immediate halt. Panting deeply, she forced herself to blurt out a speedy, "Sorry, I forgot," before trying to regain her composure. And once she did, all she could do was flatten her ears in embarrassment, staring down at her paws. She hadn't bothered to try and get a look at the other cats, as she already knew what they were thinking.

Dovepaw was at a full pelt, trying to catch up with Fleapaw. Her smaller legs kicked up puffs of warm dust, and her ears were full, the sound her heartbeat louder than thunder. Though she was breathless, she was more than excited - her first training session with another apprentice! She had hoped it might be her sister, but Dawnpaw was collecting moss today. Fleapaw was an acceptable replacement - Dovepaw liked the slightly older apprentice. She knew how to have fun!
Dovepaw was so distracted by her thoughts, it was a miracle that she ended up in the ForestClan training grounds. Her paws seemed to remember Foxstar's directions from when they toured the territory together.
However, StarClan was not watching over Dovepaw as she slammed right into another cat.

Foxstar padded swiftly to the clearing, weaving through the trees and undergrowth. His tail was raised high as he approached the clearing. In the corner of his eye he noticed two gray and black pelts dart pass- he guessed it was Dovepaw and Fleapaw. He let out a purr of amusement. The two apprentinces were basically excited over everything. He quickiened his pace so he would arrive to the clearing first- it would look strange if the apprentinces arrived to the clearing first. He arrived in the clearing just in the nick of time.
"Hello Rain-" He started to greet until a sudden weight slammed into him, almost knocking him over. He rebalanced himself as he looked into who-or what- knocked into him. He looked down to see a grey fluffball.

The other cats arrived quickly. Rainfall nodded to Foxstar respectfully. They smiled gently at Fleapaw as she came crashing into the clearing, but she didn't seem to notice. "Fleapaw, you're allowed to look at us," they mewed. They were just glad she showed up- Rainfall was never really much of an "on time" sort of cat. They didn't have time to greet Foxstar properly, as Dovepaw barreled into him quite suddenly. They mewed indecipherably in surprise.
"Oh dear, watch-" they started, but quickly stopped. They wanted to give a gentle lecture, but Foxstar could handle his own apprentice.

As told, Fleapaw moved her eyes away from her paws to look back up at Rainfall. She couldn't quite look them straight in the eye yet, nor did she enjoy the fact they thought she was scared, of all things, but still, there was a tiny part of her that was thankful for Rainfall not sounding angry about her mistake.
Then, without warning, something flashed right past her, causing Fleapaw to stiffen in surprise. The apprentice quickly glanced over to see what it was, and saw Foxstar with an overly close Dovepaw. Holding back a frown, she briefly wondered how much training she had missed, only to try and internally shake it off. As ashamed as she was, it was becoming apparent to Fleapaw that she was letting her feelings get in the way of learning, and that, was what she wanted least. Training was already difficult enough on it's own, so surely piling on a thing like this would only cause more trouble.
Turning back to Rainfall, Fleapaw looked at them straight instead of the lopsided look she had given them earlier. "So," Fleapaw began, trying to sound hopeful despite her desire for something to take her away as soon as possible, "what battle moves are we learning today?" She paused for a small moment, before immediately realizing that she didn't sound as happy as she'd intended. Adding on a small smile, she continued with the first thing that came to mind, "I wanna know how to dodge the other cat's paws when you're stuck and don't know what to do."
Barely a heartbeat later, Fleapaw, again, realized a mistake. "I mean," she mewed, hurriedly correcting herself, "when you're dazed and the other cat is still coming after you. Ya' know, the other cat wants to hurt you, but there are specks in your eyes."
Even with her efforts to keep herself sounding and looking cheery, Fleapaw's smile was quickly turning into a nervous one. At this point, she didn't know how many mix-ups she could sit through before it would fade entirely. She had already embarrassed herself once, but now it was obvious to her that she was doing it again.
(Straight and lopsided were the best words I could come up with for that one sentence. :I )

Dovepaw picked herself up from Foxstar, eyes wide as moons and fur fluffed up at all angles. How could she always be so oblivious all the time? Dawnpaw was always saying she might hurt herself - or someone else - someday. What if she hurt Foxstar?
"I-I'm so sorry!" she exclaimed, flustered. "I didn't mean to ram into you! Are you all right?"

(I delayed this too much)
Foxstar gave a deep sigh at Dovepaw. "Yes, I'm fine." He mewed, shaking out his pelt. "Anyhow, let me get back to what I was saying." He turned back over to Rainfall. "Hello, Rainfall." He mewed, then turned his gaze to Fleapaw. "Hi, Fleapaw." He added. "Already ready for training, aren't you?" He turned back to Dovepaw. "You better be too!" He mewed. "So, is everyone ready?"

Dovepaw tightened her fur to her body, trying to look like a leader's apprentice ought to. She did her best to stand stock-still, and she meowed as calmly as possible, "I'm ready!"
She couldn't keep her tail from trembling, though. She just wanted to impress - to do good! She was strong; she could learn.
I might even be the Clan's best fighter! she thought.

Rainfall wasn't quite ready for Fleapaw's barrage of questions. "Uh," they said, glancing at Foxstar. Hopefully he wouldn't notice their... general slack-jawed appearance. They straightened up. "We can cover that today," they told Fleapaw. They frowned. She appeared really nervous. They weren't sure why, but they didn't want her flinching throughout the entire session. "Cheer up! We're about to start," they told her, trying to sound reassuring.
Foxstar appeared to have collected himself. Hopefully he'd missed that exchange completely... Rainfall didn't want him to regret giving them Fleapaw to train.
Dovepaw had already collected herself, it seemed. But her tail-twitching gave away her excitement. Rainfall glanced over at Fleapaw. "I think we're ready... am I right, Fleapaw?" They asked, hopefully in an encouraging tone.
