Squirrelstar flicked her ear. She knew the story of Moon - of how they came from the Moontree to stop the fighting between the original three Clans, only to disappear again and never been seen. She blinked.
"I have no idea, Alderpaw," she admitted gruffly. "According to the stories, they came from within the Moontree... but in all my visits I can confirm that I have never seen or scented them down there. Some think that Oceanstar's prayers were what summoned them forth...
"I believe that it might not have happened at all," Squirrelstar told him. "And that maybe the character of Moon was simply put there so that kits wouldn't need to hear of the fighting that divided up the territory."

"Oh." ALderpaw mumbled, feeling a bit disappointed with his mentor's answer. While in the nursery his favorite part of the day was when Thistlefoot would visit him and his siblings and tell them different stories. He had loved hearing how Moon had brought the Clans together.
He broke this train of thought; he was an apprentice now, he couldn't hang on to nursery tales. "So where is OceanClan territory?"

Squirrelstar nodded towards a hillier part of the territory. "Over that way," she mewed.
She led the young apprentice along their scentline, until another river's babbling could be heard. Squirrelstar curled her nose at the fishy, salty stench of OceanClan's markers. The sun was beginning to set, casting range shadows over the flatter, grassy plains of OceanClan territory.
"Take a whiff," she meowed. "You won't be able to forget such a smell! OceanClan always makes a stink about their border containing some of our hills..."

Alderpaw sniffed eagerly, then immediately flinched as the reek of fish hit his nose. "Ugh, is that what they really smell like? It's horrible!" He groaned, his nose curling at the stench. "How do they deal with it?"

Squirrelstar twitched her whiskers, probably the closest to laughing she'd gotten this entire trip, and probably the closest she would get for the whole day, unless Nightflight or Blizzardfur were particularly funny today.
"My mother used to tell me that they rolled in fish," she offered. "To this day it's the only reason I can find to explain why they stink so much... my first Gathering I was pushed into a mob of OceanClan cats and I thought I'd fallen into a pile of dead fish."
She blinked. "The breeze wasn't entirely in our favor today," she admitted. "You barely got a sense of FlameClan's smell - you won't forget that one, either. I used to think that their ancestors rolled in soot and char so much that the smell passed on to their kits! Now ForestClan you might not smell until your first Gathering... their smell is more tolerable."
Squirrelstar took a deep breath. "Then again," she said, "I suppose we stink to the other Clans, too. When you smell something so drastically different from what you're used to, you tend to think of it in an extreme way like that."

"Yeah but we can't smell that bad!" Alderpaw meowed. "At least we'll know when they're trying to invade."

Squirrelstar nodded in agreement.
"We ought to get back home," she meowed. "I expect your paws are tired. We'll take an easy route and be back before sundown - follow me."
She raised her stump tail and headed off.
