Lightningfoot sat down. He sighed. As much as he wanted to help, he was sure that it would be better if Batpaw figured a way down on his own. Lightningfoot had all four of his legs - he had no idea, or right, to try and tell Batpaw how to get down.
"Don't take too long," he called. Cinderstep would be expecting them back soon, with a report of how Batpaw was doing.

He cautiously settled himself down and let his shoulder hang limp over the branch to avoid straining it any more. After a few minutes, he decided to try again. Placing each foot carefully and precisely, he slowly made his way back down the tree. It took him a while, but eventually he touched back down on the ground and let out a relieved sigh. He had come into the training session feeling as confident as ever, but now his heart was beating so fast and his head was spinning so much he was surprised he didn't faint.

Lightningfoot frowned.
"Do you want to keep at it?" he asked. He could tell that this was hard on his apprentice. I hope he knows that he doesn't have to climb trees to be a warrior, he thought. It looks like it's straining him a lot.

He didn't answer for a moment. His shoulder felt like it was on fire, but he didn't want to give up; his pride was already hurting, and he didn't want to back to camp without making a bit more progress in his training. Standing up a little straighter, he put on a brave face and answered, "Of course! I'm up for it!"

Lightningfoot couldn't help but smile at Batpaw's eagerness. "Keep climbing, then," he said. "Just don't hesitate to tell me if you need my help - you can choose any tree, but make sure it's branches are low and don't go any further than what you did with this tree; not until you're limbs are strong enough to support you climbing up and down."
If he keeps this up he'll have the strongest legs of any ForestClan cat! Lightningfoot thought.

Hearing the happiness and pride in his mentor's voice gave him an extra boost of confidence. "Don't worry, I won't push myself too hard this time." Eyeing the forest around him, he spotted the perfect climbing tree, a dying pine. It had shed many of its needles, so he wouldn't have to worry that much about getting poked too badly, and there were dozens of branches for him to hold onto. Stepping slowly, he made his way over to it and snaked his way through the mess of twigs to the trunk and started to ascend upwards. This time it was much easier to climb, not having to worry about getting a running start or not having a foothold.

Lightningfoot watched as Batpaw made his way up the tree. He eyed the dying pine warily - dying trees were a gamble to climb; sometimes they just up and fell right out from beneath a cat, no matter their weight.
He'll do fine, Lightningfoot told himself.

Soon he neared the top branches of the pine, panting but gazing out of the bare twigs with satisfaction. It was then that he spotted just above his head a large tree branch jutting from a nearby oak. It had grown out and become entangled with the pine boughs. From where Batpaw was sitting it was hard to tell, but it seemed rather sturdy. Maybe i could just... climb onto that and into the other tree, he though, but then looked down at Lightningfoot wearily. He probably wouldn't want me to do that. But... I guess it wouldn't hurt to get a closer look at it. With hesitance, he balanced on his haunches and reached up his front paw to grab onto the next pine branch. Just as he was getting settled and ready to reach up to the next one, SNAP. Lightningfoot had good reason the worry; both the disease that was killing the tree and the blistering greenleaf heat had left it brittle. The branch gave out under the apprentice's weight and sent him plummeting down to earth. Or, at least, a few branches down. Since the pine tree was so densely covered in twigs, it was rather hard to fall from one of the top branches without another catching you on the way down. And that is exactly what happened. Batpaw clung to the cluster of branches that had broken his fall with two paws, the last dangling awkwardly, kicking the air in an attempt to find another foothold, which it eventually did. In all honestly, he looked rather hilarious, hanging from a few branches for dear life with his tail so bristled up it resembled the very tree he was stuck in.

Lightningfoot's eyes flew wide.
"Batpaw!" he called, worried. "Are you all right?"

"Mhm," was the only reply he was able to force out, his bulging yellow eyes not doing much to hide his panic. For a moment he remained hanging there, still frozen in shock. Eventually he clambered back up onto the branch and bolted down the trunk as fast as possible for a cat with three legs. With his paws planted firmly back on the ground, he sighed in both relief and frustration and shook out his still fluffed up pelt, tossing dried up pine needles in every direction.
