Bright light streamed through the canopy above ForestClan's camp, casting dappled shadows about the grassy clearing. The stifling midday heat had sent many cats to the more shaded areas underneath the trees that bordered the camp, where temperatures were at their coolest, which is to say, not very cool at all. Batpaw had stretched himself out on a patch of moss near the twisted roots of an ancient oak tree. He was completely motionless apart from his slowly rising and falling chest, and his tail, which gave an occasional twitch. Through half closed eyes he watched his fellow clan members move sluggishly about the clearing, darting from shadow to shadow to avoid the patches of ground that had grown hot from being exposed to the sun all day. The apprentice silently hoped that none of the warriors would notice him slacking off so he wouldn't be forced to go on hunting trip or a border patrol. No way he was going to leave the one patch of shade in camp that was actually somewhat cool.

Rainfall slipped back into camp. The hunting patrol had been successful, but quite exhausting. They placed the last prey item they'd caught, a squirrel, into the pile. There. Now they were going to take a nice, long nap. Hopefully nothing outlandish would happen while they were asleep. They really didn't want to be bothered more this afternoon... hopefully Fleapaw wouldn't mind.
They spotted a shady patch under the roots of an oak tree. Eager to relax, they hurried to it. Flopping down, they stretched, getting ready to curl into the ideal sleeping-Rainfall position, when their tail brushed over something alive and furry. Confused, they peered over their own bulk. Batpaw's dark fur had been lost in the shade. He seemed to have gotten the same idea as Rainfall.
"Hi, Batpaw," they said, wanting to be polite. "Sorry about my tail," they added, tucking it back against their body.

Darkeyes pushed herself through the warriors den entrance. She was glad she got to go on dusk patrol where it was cooler but the heat wasn't letting her sleep very well. She padded into the sunlight, blinking with annoyance at the bright lights and heat. She looked around camp, noticing the sprawling cats in the shade and decided that would be a much better idea than trying to go out of camp. She walked up to Rainfall and Batpaw, greating them with a flick of her tail. "Hey guys." She treated with a hoarse purr. "StarClan it's hot out. How was hunting Rainfall?" She asked.

(Super sorry for the late reply :c )
The apprentice was knocked out of his trance of boredom when something tickled his fur. Something very alive. Startled, his head shot up, neck fur bristling and his yellow eyes wide. Seeing it was just Rainfall, his tensed body relaxed. In his stupor he hadn't noticed them sitting down beside him. "S'alright," he replied, trying to act like he wasn't just scared stiff by the warrior. His head swiveled around at the sound of Darkeyes' voice, to whom he gave a little nod in acknowledgement. "Hey Darkeyes. Sure is, I've been sitting here all day trying not to catch fire in this stupid heat," he complained.

(don't worry! we've all got a life outside of this stuff.)
Rainfall gave a little purr back to Darkeyes. "Well enough. I'm surprised they haven't all died in this heat," they joked. "I hope your hunting has been well."
Hearing Batpaw's complaint, they laughed. "Any hotter and you just might. I think you've got the right idea, hanging around under here."

Batpaw snorted. "Yeah, this is the coolest spot in the whole camp. Believe me, I've tried every tiny shade patch to find the perfect spot to sleep the day away, and this was the best I could find." He glanced over the clearing cautiously, hoping his mentor wasn't around to hear that last comment.

Darkeyes let out a small laugh. "Don't worry Batpaw, I'm sure every cat is trying to find spots to hang right now." She reassured the tom. "It's too hot to work hard today." She complained, sitting down beside them. There were many times she was glad for her shorter pelt and today was one of those days. "Good thing prey is stilling running well." She commented, noticing the fresh-kill pile was still stocked.

Rainfall quite agreed with Batpaw's assessment. "I could barely hunt. My paws felt like they were melting!"
At least there was plenty to eat. Darkeyes was correct- no cat would be going hungry. If the heat weren't so miserable, they'd be quite happy. All this food was good for everyone. Maybe their tiny apprentice would grow a little.
"I'm glad we've got so much to eat, I don't want to have to go and work in this heat more than I need too..." they said.

"Luckily I think Foxstar and Honeyflower are as tired as we are. I don't think there should be any more patrols until it gets cooler." Darkeyes sent up a silent prayer to StarClan that the green-leaf heat would soon die down, it was hard to be motivated when you could feel your pelt burning off.
Darkeyes began to groom herself, pausing between licks to get sentences out. "At least the gathering is tomorrow." She commented. "Although I'm surprised Foxstar is letting me go even though I ran over the border." She still was angry at herself for not being careful enough, she should have been paying more attention. "I bet three squirrels that Buzzardstar will take personal offense to it and say that ForestClan is trying to invade their territory...."

"I suppose you're right," he replied, giving a little shrug. Glancing over at the pile of fresh kill, hoping that the heat wouldn't affect their food supply. "Well, if she does bring it up, then Starclan be with you. I'm pretty sure I'm coming too, or at least I hope so. I haven't been to a gathering since I lost this," he said, flicking his ear to his stumpy leg.
