The StarClan that watches over the Valley Clans are harsher and less benevolent than the StarClan of the Lake Clans.
That doesn't mean that they aren't benevolent, though - this set of warrior ancestors is just less lenient. If you are bad, you go to the Dark Forest. If you are good, you go to StarClan. There is a gray area, but it's not much of one.
And if you're too powerful, you'll have half your territory burnt to the ground.
This StarClan values balance and order in their Valley - they led the founders of the Clans here, seasons upon seasons ago, and they don't want to see these Clans screw it up. Once, they realized that having only three Clans unbalanced things - so they split ForestClan's territory in two with a great strike of lightning and decreed that there must be four.
Or so the Clans believe.
This StarClan does care about the Clans, and loves them whether or not they truly believe in their existence. They acknowledge that they should not control the Clans - only guide them. When the founders came, StarClan did not command them to create Clans, but sent Moon to gently guide the three founders towards that path. Through Moon StarClan created the first three Clans, helped shape the warrior code, and divided the territory into three - and then four, but that was without Moon - and made the Valley a home.
Beliefs of the Clans:
FlameClan is the most devout. Because StarClan made them, they believe that StarClan can take them away. They take every StarClan-made ceremony seriously, and if one is skipped or screwed up it is seen as a horrible omen. The word of a medicine cat is as powerful (sometimes more powerful) as the word of a leader.
OceanClan is a close follower of StarClan. They are peaceful, and do not wish the wrath of any spirits on them. They perform their ceremonies well and never miss a beat. Medicine cats are honored for their duties, and are always a place of honor.
ForestClan believes in StarClan as well, and keeps their faith tight in fear of losing more of their territory. Though they are still as vain and selfish as they were before, ForestClan has learned their lesson. They see their medicine cats as the best in the Valley, and proclaim often that they have the best training since Larkleap was so influential.
MountainClan is dubious in their beliefs. They live the closest to StarClan, and yet their mindset is the furthest away. A medicine cats duties are not disrespected - in fact any cat who disrespects any other cat in MountainClan gets a harsh reprimand - but they do not believe that StarClan are any mightier than they are. Some wonder whether MountainClan truly believes in StarClan or not - but they perform their ceremonies, and that's what counts, right?
