In the center of the Valley there is a massive tree - whose branches cover all other trees. No tree in the Valley dares grow higher, for this tree touches the stars.
When the founders of the three original Clans came, they found this tree and sat in awe. Its roots were massive, twisting, creating caverns and caves. Its bark was white, like moonstone. Its leaves were fragments of starlight.
That was when the fighting began. The three founders recognized that this tree was important - sacred - and that only one of them could possess it.
Mountain, leader of the strongest and biggest, argued that all should join under his name or perish. The Moontree would be his, and no one else's - or he would destroy it.
Forest, leader of the agile and noble, argued that they ought to split it - but that he and his cats should have the bigger half. If they could not share, then they were weak - and if they could not give Forest and his cats what they were due for feeding them throughout their long journey, then they would destroy the tree.
Ocean, the kindhearted brother of Mountain and leader of the steadfast and peaceful, did not argue. Instead he prayed to the starry warriors that guided him through dreams - prayed for an end to the conflict, before this great, beautiful tree was destroyed.
And it came.
From within the trees cavernous roots came a white cat of indiscernible gender. They called themselves Moon, and their voice alone put an end to Forest's and Mountain's bickering. All three founders looked up in awe as the white cat glowed like moonlight and described to them the future laid down before them by StarClan - they would share this Valley and all its riches, form Clans, and follow the warrior code.
Moon beckoned for the founders to follow, and they did - even suspicious Mountain, who cared not for spiritual things. Moon led them deep into the caverns of the Moontree, and there they found a great opening. Inside was a well-lit cavern made of rock and dirt, with the roots of the Moontree dipped into a glowing pool.
Moon asked for each founder to drink from the pool, and they did. When they swallowed, they began to dream.
Before them stood StarClan, sparkling in all its glory - each and every cat lost to bring the founders here, and each and every cat lost in their old home, too. They could hardly believe their eyes!
And then Moon came forth. He described the ceremony they were about to endure - nine lives, and a regal name.
When the founders came out of the Moontree, they were Foreststar, Oceanstar, and Mountainstar - leaders of ForestClan, OceanClan, and MountainClan.
With the help of Moon, they created the warrior code and distributed the borders as evenly as possible. Moon did not object when Foreststar opted for the largest half of territory - they only warned that if the selfishness and vanity of his Clan did not stop, they would face the consequences.
Moon also selected the first three medicine cats - Larkleap, of ForestClan; Redbelly of OceanClan; and Stonebird of MountainClan. Each was chosen for their keen spiritual senses, and told to visit the pool every half-moon so that they could communicate with StarClan. In awe of them, the founders decided that it ought to be part of the warrior code that medicine cats do this.
Moon added only one tenant to the warrior code - no harm should come to the Moontree.
With that, Moon disappeared as suddenly as they had come, and has not been seen since.
