Emberfur crouched in the shade at the foot of the rocky wall that was FlameClan's camp. She'd been able to share a thin squirrel with her apprentice, Crowpaw, and it was nice to have the edge taken off her hunger. But it just cleared her mind enough to worry about something else. In this case it was the reports of patrols finding fox scent near the ForestClan border. As if they didn't have enough problems finding food without competing with a fox as well. She sighed and sat up with her tail twitching anxiously. What could they do about it? Would they just have to wait to hope ForestClan chased it off? The thought made her shudder.

Firetail approached his sister. His own meal had been light as well, lighter than most. He sat beside her. Firetail had heard reports of the fox just near the ForestClan border - near where he and Redpaw had been hunting not long ago.
I'm glad we didn't encounter it then, he thought. It would have found us easy prey.
He touched his tail to Emberfur's shoulder. He didn't want to guess what she was thinking - if he got it wrong, he'd look like a fool. It seemed so unfair that as soon as it seemed like the prey was beginning to come back, a fox had to come and ruin it all.

Emberfur looked up when Firetail approached. She waited to see if he would say anything and hesitated a moment when he remained quiet. "So," she began softly. "What do you think Buzzardstar is going to do about the fox?" She was careful to keep her voice down, as if talking about the fox might make it appear in the camp. Really, she just didn't want the youngest members of the Clan to overhear her if they were nearby. Whether it made them excited or scared, they didn't need to know about the danger in their territory. Not yet, anyway.

Firetail blinked - so she was worried about the fox. He settled himself more comfortably beside her.
Keeping his voice as low as her's, so as to not make her feel as if her worries were groundless, he replied, "She'll probably send a patrol to scare it off. It'll be tough, though; it's so far into the Valley already... it has nowhere to go but up." Not unless it wants to drown in the ocean, that is...
He looked about the camp, making sure none of the younger cats were listening. Last thing they needed were reckless would-be heroes trying to chase off a fox. Then, he added, "She'll have to think of a way to get rid of it without pushing it into ForestClan territory, too. We've got enough to deal with when it comes to them."

Emberfur's ear flicked when Firetail suggested they avoid chasing it onto ForestClan territory. "But if it's on ForestClan territory, then we won't have to deal with it." She could have also mentioned that they were probably better equipped to handle it than her own starving Clanmates, but she didn't. "Besides, it's so close to the border maybe it will just go there of its own accord," she suggested hopefully.

Firetail's ears pricked. "I suppose," he said. "ForestClan probably would have a better time of it than us." He hated admitting his own Clan was too weak to deal with something as menial as a fox. He dug his claws into the stone.
He looked up at the nursery. The kits were clambering about, fur fluffed against the chill. "We need to make sure it doesn't get them, though," he said. Those kits were their future, and beloved by the Clan. Losing them would probably erase what hope FlameClan had.

Emberfur followed her brother's gaze to the playing kits. Coalkit was standing, facing his littermates with his tail straight up saying something that sounded bossy. She gave a firm nod of agreement. "We won't let anything happen to them," she promised. She let a moment of silence pass before changing the subject. "Well anyways, how is Redpaw's training going?" she asked.

Firetail lifted his tail a little. "She's doing great," he replied. "Still a little jittery - I don't think that's going to go away - but she's progressing very well. She'll make a great FlameClan warrior."
He glanced over at the apprentice's cave. Redpaw was there, huddled up with her denmates, sharing a measly bit of fresh-kill. "We've had alright luck with hunting - it's a shame that with the prey shortage she doesn't have a chance to truly practice her skills."

Emberfur gave a small, sympathetic nod. She knew what it was like to be a nervous warrior. She nodded again when Firetail pointed out the lack of prey making it difficult to train hunting skills. "Yeah," she muttered. "But Redpaw is still young so hopefully she will get practice when prey is more plentiful. I mean... this can't last forever, right?"

Firetail suddenly didn't want to share his rather un-optimistic feelings towards the prey shortage with his sister. He knew she would become distressed if she knew that Firetail believed this might just last forever. He mentally shook off the dark thoughts and meowed, as chipper as he could manage, "Certainly not... StarClan will do something about it! They'll have to."
If it turns out StarClan is against us too, then we literally have no hope... the thought made Firetail shiver.
