Morningflower walked across the dry land outside of camp. She weaved between large clumps of grass. "There should be some by the stream." She said to Smokepaw. "Let's hope Mountainclan leaves us alone." She began to walk a bit faster, headed in the direction of the mountains.

Smokepaw sped up his own steps, struggling a little to keep up with Morningflower. At her last words, his fur began to bristle. "Would Mountainclan really hurt us?" He asked nervously. Suddenly alert and tensed, Smokepaw began to look around as if Mountainclan warriors were about to attack.

Morningflower laughed a little bit. "Probably not. We are medicine cats, after all. Plus, what are they going to attack us for? We'll be on our own territory." She stopped as they reached the stream. She stepped carefully down onto the bank and began to walk along it, her left paws in shallow water. "Y'know, this isn't half bad. Too bad we don't have more streams. We'd have a lot easier time getting herbs and water."

"At least we have the ones we have!" Smokepaw trotted past his mentor so that all of his paws were submerged. He let out a slight sigh at the water's cool temperature, relieving his paws from the heat of the scorched earth. "DO we need any other herbs then yarrow while we're here?"

"Not really." She replied. "Although, I wouldn't mind refreshing our stocks of watermint." She stopped at a pile of rocks. "Look" she said, waving her tail at a few tall stalks of flowers. They had thin leaves and yellowish white blooms. "That's yarrow." She said. She walked over and began to pull a plant up with her teeth, grasping it from the bottom and nipping it off. "Make sure not to swallow any. Wouldn't want you getting sick."

"I know, I won't!" He said. He watched Morningflower, trying to determine where to start pulling the plant up from. After a few second he walked over to a yarrow plant and began to chew at the base. He cringed at the bitter taste, but kept biting until it came lose. He looked over at his mentor proudly. "How much do we need?"

She dropped another stalk onto her growing pile. "Quite a bit. I want to have plenty to last us until next green-leaf. It only really grows when it's sunny." She turned her head and looked around. "I see a few other herbs that I should grab while we're here. I'll show you what they are and what they do once I've picked them. You keep at this yarrow." She padded over to a large clump of a dark green plant with purple flowers and began biting off leaves.

"Okay!" He replied, moving on to the next stalk. As time went on, he had gathered quite a large pile of the tall plants. He looked at the remaining yarrow, before deciding to leave a few stalks to keep growing. He turned to the tortoiseshell medicine cat. "Hey Morningflower, I think I've gotten enough!"

She turned andpadded over to him, carrying large amounts of two different plants in her mouth. She set them down and looked at the pile of yarrow. "Wow! You did great!" She gestured to the other plants. "The one with dark leaves and purple flowers is mallow." She prodded it with her paw. "Its good for bellyache, and its fairly easy to find. The other one you already know, marigold. Do you remember what its used for?" She flicked the bright yellow flowers with her tail.

Smokepaw's ears flatten against his head at the question. The pride from Morningflower's praise disappeared as he struggled to come up with the answer. "Marigold is used for infections, and um, something else," Smokepaw looked towards the ground, shame replacing his confusion. "I can't remember what else, I'm sorry."
