Although at first Fleapaw was bewildered by Dovepaw attacking before her, she finally reacted to it by hastily scurrying to the side so that she wouldn't get hit. After this, Fleapaw felt her confidence soar. If Dovepaw kept this up, she'd still have a chance at winning!
(Typed while sort of sleepy, so I'm hoping that I didn't miss any major mistakes. Also, I think I may have messed up how I wrote the "flinching backwards" thing in my last post. I meant it as in she made this really awkward leap backwards. My bad. >_<)

((It's all right; I'm a little sluggish too))
Dovepaw crashed to the dirt, her rump in the air. "Oof!" she exclaimed. She scrabbled to her paws and twisted around to face Fleapaw. She aimed two quick strikes at the other apprentice, fur fluffing as frustration began to boil beneath her pelt.

Fleapaw managed to twist her way out of the path of one paw, but accidentally allowed her belly to get hit by the other. Quickly scrabbling away, the apprentice was left winded for a few moments before she eventually spun herself back in the direction of Dovepaw. By now, Fleapaw's hope had been crushed. Dovepaw was trying new things, which meant that Fleapaw would have to endure several attacks before she could figure out how to adjust to them. She wasn't sure if she could keep up with this.
When she felt ready enough to get back into battle again, Fleapaw was, thankfully, able to decide on doing the first thing that she came up with: swiftly diving forward to try and repeat the side move that she had done earlier.

Dovepaw felt a surge of hope - she had hit Fleapaw! Yes!
Her hopes sank, however, when Fleapaw began to lunge. Dovepaw's fur fluffed up and she darted out of the way, panting. When she rushed again at Fleapaw, she gave a mighty leap - she had heard of warriors leaping onto the backs of their enemies. Could she pull off the same thing?

What now?! It was silly of her to think this, but part of her hoped that maybe it would actually cause an idea to flash into her mind. As a last resort, Fleapaw raised one of her forepaws to bat Dovepaw's away, but she soon discovered that Dovepaw was doing something entirely different.
With a sudden and huge amount of weight on top of her, Fleapaw's legs gave out and she collapsed, grimacing when her chin hit the ground. She tried to squirm her way out from under Dovepaw, but this was a lot more difficult than she expected. After a few heartbeats of this, Fleapaw was left with absolutely no progress and no plans on what else there was for her to do.
(Do cats even have chins?)

Dovepaw purred triumphantly as she picked herself up off of Fleapaw. "I squashed you good!" she joked, waving her tail. Blinking, she asked, "Y-You're not hurt, are you?"

"Of course not!" Fleapaw answered, hastily jumping to her paws. "I just didn't know what to do at the end, that's all!" She had been expecting it, but Fleapaw still couldn't hide her disappointment over losing. And, along with that, she knew that her performance had been terrible- despite the few times where she nearly redeemed herself.
But, noticing how rude she sounded, the apprentice apologized. "Sorry," she muttered, briefly flattening her ears. Then, with curious eyes, she tried to lighten the mood. "How'd you do that?" she asked. "I thought you were gonna pummel my face, but it was all a trick!"

Dovepaw twitched her whiskers. "Why would I do that?" she wondered. "I was just trying to do something I'd heard warriors do - I wanted to see what it was like clinging to your back!"
She looked over at Foxstar and Rainfall. If they wanted more of a demonstration, she would be willing to give it - but with all the dust clinging to her fur and her already-aching paws, she was wondering if they could stop for a moment.
"How'd we do?" she asked.

Foxstar flicked his tail. "Both of you did pretty well." He mewed. "For beginners, of course!" He then padded over to Fleapaw. "It's alright, Fleapaw. Dovepaw pulled a very good trick on you." He mewed, wondering if the apprentice was sad that she lost. He then turned over to Dovepaw. "That was a very good move, good job!" He purred. "Have any other feedback, Rainfall?"

Rainfall gasped as Dovepaw flew into Fleapaw. They stayed in place, but were itching to go check over their tiny apprentice. They wouldn't want her to be injured in a mere practice. She was so tiny, the bigger apprentice could easily hurt her without meaning to.
However, seconds later the two picked themselves up. Rainfall smiled at their banter- no harm done! Fleapaw had seemed a little flustered with Dovepaw's attacks. They would have to work with her on that, but ultimately they couldn't teach her quick thinking.
They padded forward with Foxstar. They were thankful for his words to Fleapaw- she needed as much encouragement as possible.
"You did well- both of you had some pretty impressive moves!" They winked. "Fleapaw," they began. "I noticed that you seemed to be flustered with some of Dovepaw's attacks- is this correct?" They paused. "Don't feel ashamed, you still did well. You're showing improvement and you should feel proud. But you do need to remember to not freeze up when you're being attacked. Thinking of an amazing, clever move every time there's an opening isn't necessary. If you stand still because you can't think of what to do, that makes you an easier target," they explained. They then smiled, swishing their tail in a friendly way. They weren't mad at Fleapaw at all, it was simply what they had observed. They hoped she didn't feel put down, they had genuinely been impressed with her performance.
They paused to think. "Well, that's all, really." They said, feeling a little awkward. Would Foxstar approve of their teaching method?
