Turtlepaw heard the swish of reeds and patter of paws - she dared to raise her head a little. Was that Pikepaw? If it was, and he was fleeing, had the bird seen him?
Her fur prickled with dread when she realized that the bird's long beak was pointed in the direction of the sound. It had one long leg lifted - Turtlepaw couldn't imagine how fast it could go on those! If it really was Pikepaw, then they were probably going to run back to camp and get help - if the heron followed, it might snatch him!
Turtlepaw knew it was mouse-brained, but she lifted her head and let out a screech. The heron swiveled its head to look at the closer sound, its beady eyes focusing on Turtlepaw.
Trembling from ears to tail, Turtlepaw hoped that Pikepaw would quickly get help - or she had just made a possibly fatal mistake.

Pikepaw froze mid-dash, paws scrabbling at the ground. Turtlepaw!
Turning, he saw the enormous bird looming over her. Why hadn't they spotted her first? She was about to be skewered by this bird!
Terrified, he flew at the bird from behind, aiming a swipe at its spindly leg, claws unsheathed. The feeling of its scaly flesh parting under their claws made them shudder, but they had no time to be appalled. The bird seemed ruffled by its two targets. It turned away from Turtlepaw to swipe at Pikepaw with its wings. The blows dizzied him- he stumbled away, ears ringing.

Turtlepaw's heart was beating so fast she thought it might burst from her chest. Pikepaw was actually fighting the heron! Despite the danger of the situation, Turtlepaw couldn't help but feel flattered by their actions. That flattery only lasted a moment - the heron stabbed its beak at Pikepaw, warking angrily. Its leg was bleeding, loose scaly flesh flapping about.
Turtlepaw lunged for the leg, wrapping her skinny limbs around it and biting down onto the wound as hard as she could.
The heron's reaction was nothing less than horrifyingly loud.

A dreadful screech tore the air, leaving Pikepaw's ears ringing even worse in the aftermath of the heron's blows. What a terrifying creature!
Turtlepaw clung to its leg, teeth dug into the gash he'd left. What a brave cat! Their silly idea had gotten them both into trouble, but she still was fighting the bird. Determined to drive off the creature, Pikepaw lunged forward, trying to aim despite their dizziness. They tackled the bird's free leg, trying to throw it off its feet while it still was in shock from Turtlepaw's bite.
The bird scrambled, not quite toppling. Pikepaw's vision was obscured by beating wings. Frantic, he lashed out, squirming away from the thrashing heron. They gave their best snarl. It was loud, albeit strangled. Hopefully Turtlepaw could get away...

Turtlepaw suddenly found herself crushed under the weight of the bird, spitting and choking on its feathers. For a moment she panicked - but the bird quickly let out a cry and flapped its wings frantically. It got off of Turtlepaw, limping on one leg.
She got to her paws quickly, streaking to Pikepaw's side. Her mouth tasted like heron blood and her limbs were shaking, but she fluffed up her fur and spat at the bird when it turned to face the two young cats.
"Go away!" she screeched. "We don't want you here!"

Following suit, Pikepaw joined Turtlepaw. "Uh, yeah!" He shouted. No, they had to do better. "Leave us alone!" He added, trying to fluff his fur more than it was already. The bird seemed as visibly discouraged as such a non-catlike creature could.

The heron squaked, but Turtlepaw kept it up, feeling more confident now that Pikepaw was joining in.
"Go away!" she repeated, as loudly as she could. She lashed out with one paw, claws unsheathed. "Get out of here!"

Pikepaw lashed his tail, egged on by Turtlepaw.
"I'll claw you again if you don't move!" They yowled. He didn't actually want to have to tussle with the enormous bird again, but if felt good to act big and tough.

The heron flapped its wings, letting out a cry before taking flight, tucking its wounded leg against its body. Turtlepaw looked up in triumph as it flew away, its dark shadow passing beyond her sight.
Once the heron was gone, her skinny legs trembled and she crouched low to the ground with shock, trembling from ears to tail-tip. She did not want to every experience anything like that again.

Pikepaw watched the heron flee, almost not believing it. Almost. It was too good to be true! Plenty of other cats had come out of encounters like that with more injuries to boast.
Suddenly, Turtlepaw began to shake beside him. They tried to offer some words of comfort, but the words caught in their throat. All of that... it had just been too much. Eyes round like the full moon, he cast another glance at where they had fought the bird together.
Even a simple "let's go back to camp" would be better than silence. Limbs quivering, Pikepaw sank down to hunch next to Turtlepaw, trying not to vomit. After a few moment, he shifted, awkwardly gesturing in the rough direction with his tail. They both needed to get back... the warriors would want to hear about the heron, probably. And it would be good to have lots and lots of grown cats around them instead of grasses and rocks.
