Redpaw didn't respond for a few moments. She took her time, but quickly, she was able to get enough air into her lungs.
"I'm good," she rasped. She -might- be able to make it back to camp now. Her gaze dropped to the blackbird Firetail had. Maybe the trip had been worth it.
"I think any prey that might have been in this area is gone now," she said. Logic indicated this, and coupled with what she could smell, it seemed true. Firetail could decide whether they'd take their spoils back to camp or trek on.

Firetail took a glance around the area to find that Redpaw was right - the prey seemed to be gone. He figured he couldn't be ungrateful; they'd caught more this time around than Firetail wagered he'd caught for half a moon. He flicked his tail.
"We ought to head back," Firetail decided. "What we've will tempt the queens... and we might just find something on the way back if we keep our noses up."
Firetail did his best to sound optimistic for his apprentice, and for the first time he felt a little flutter of hope about the prey possibly coming back. He scooped the blackbird up in his jaws and motioned in the direction of camp.

Redpaw nodded. Without comment, she picked up her catch and followed her mentor.
She tried to stay alert like he'd suggested. Dead rabbit scent clogged her nose and mouth, but she could use her ears and eyes. Firetail might spot something, but the only prey she saw were some small birds flying far overheard.

The two made it back to camp with regrettably no more prey than they had found - but Firetail couldn't be disappointed. They had been more than lucky. The day was winding down, and Firetail's muscles lagged as they reached the stony heights of the camp.
Hopefully other warriors had better luck, he thought. I'm starving!
He put his blackbird down and waited until Redpaw caught up to him. He told her, "Go give the rabbit to the elders - I'll take the bird to the queens. If we got so lucky, maybe other hunters did to... if there's something on the pile, go take it to share with your denmates."
((this thread's winding down; it'll probably be complete after a few more posts))
