Apparently, life went on, even after horrible things happened.
Redpaw and Firetail were going to do some battle training. She'd had some before. It was pretty stressful- how was she supposed to remember all those moves and tactics when another cat was leaping at her, claws out?
She would try her best. She wasn't going to give anyone a reason to be disappointed in her.
Even so, she couldn't help feeling uncomfortable. Thinking about a battle right now made her think of the ugly looks her clan and ForestClan had shared.
She stood near the warrior's den, trying not to twitch. Firetail would show up, they could get started, and she could stop being a mouse.

Firetail pushed himself up in his nest. Most of the warriors were gone, but he could almost smell the hunger in the air - there certainly wasn't the smell of any fresh-kill to wake up to nowadays. He pushed himself out of the den, spotting Redpaw waiting patiently.
That's right - battle training, he thought.
Looking at her, Firetail could see nearly every rib. His own stomach growled, and Firetail wondered just how awful he looked. But when you're deputy orders you to do some battle training, you don't say no - even when you feel like you're about to fall over. The Clan had to fight on.
Heat baking his back, Firetail meowed, "Ready to go?"

It didn't take long for Firetail to emerge. It hard, sometimes, to tell how other cats were feeling. But Firetail's drooping limbs and tired posture said a lot.
"Yes." She replied, rising to her paws. Her back legs twitched a little in the process. Would her bones be able to hold themselves in place? A good gust of wind might knock her over.

"Let's go then," Firetail mewed.
He loped down the slope and out into the territory, Redpaw following behind. His paws throbbed and his stomach let out a suppressed snarl. Firetail took a moment to look up into the sky - clear blue, the sun beating down with such a blinding intensity that Firetail was surprised the whole territory hadn't caught fire yet. Not a cloud was in sight.
Firetail sighed. He didn't bother checking for scents. The grass crackled under his paws as he led Redpaw to the training area - though their entire territory was barren for the most part, this was the barest place and perfect for training. Firetail settled himself in the middle of the training area, waiting for Redpaw to catch up.

She tried to keep up as Firetail lead the way.
The times Redpaw had done battle training with Firetail before hadn't been this brutally hot. And she hadn't felt this exhausted. Heat and hunger on their own were one thing, but together...
Her head dropped. Maybe she couldn't do this. She might drop before they got there.
And they were there! Despite her exhaustion, a spark of energy flowed into her. No, she was being silly. She wasn't going to die from this- that would be pretty ridiculous. She was going to do her best training with Firetail. She made her best effort at a trot to catch up with her mentor.
"Um... what are we doing first?" She said, hoping Firetail would appreciate her asking.

Firetail sighed. It'd been a while since he and Redpaw had trained, and from the heat of the day and the hunger in his belly he wasn't sure how long either of them would last.
"We'll just go over some basics for now," Firetail told her. "Show me your roll."

Redpaw nodded. After seeing Firetail's visible weariness, it felt harder to go about work. But she wasn't going to ignore him just because she was tired.
She crouched. After a moment of preparation, she dropped fully to earth, shoving herself quickly to the left. She moved quickly, but her back paws tangled together towards the end of her roll, slowing her earlier than usual. She rose, shaking off dust. How unsatisfactory... it was hard to make a proper roll when your limbs twitched so often.

Firetail observed her with a tilted head. Redpaw was always a little... twitchy. It seemed to be getting worse with hunger.
"Keep calm," Firetail told her. "Take a deep breath to still your limbs. Try it again."

(Sorry that this took so long.)
Keep calm. Well, she could try.
Everything felt like a test, and the added struggle of being drained to her core certainly wasn't helping. "Yes, sorry," she mumbled. She could try. Taking a deep breath, she dropped and rolled again. It was smoother than the last one, at least. She rose, trying to look perky.

Firetail nodded. "Better," he mewed. He wondered what he ought to have her do next - it had to be something that wouldn't drain her too much. He did intend to teach her something today. He flicked his tail.
"Show me the last move I taught you," he asked. "You know the one - where you roll and spring onto your opponent." That one shouldn't take too much out of her, he thought. She almost had it perfect when we practiced last.
