Greenleaf weather didn't quite agree with Crowtail. She scowled down at the stones, as if her glare would make them stop burning her paws. It was incredibly hard to stake out a lizard nest when you wanted to squirm from your slowly frying paws. But she persisted. She'd been on dawn patrol, and had had no time to catch anything, meaning she herself could not eat. Grumbling quietly, she kept her eyes fixed on the gap in the rocks. She knew she'd seen lizards going in an out. She was well hidden by the curve of a boulder... she just had to wait for a lizard to be lured out by the baking sun.

"Crowtail! Oh Crowtail!" The calls had an impatient twang to them as if the small cat had spent the morning calling for the black warrior. The young apprentice was leaping from rock to rock having finally given in to her boredom of doing nothing all morning, she'd been looking for her mentor Crowtail so they could finally start her training. "Crowtail you show your face this instance, I'm not getting any closer to being your leader at this rate." Doepaw lashed her tail angrily missing her black furred mentor at his hiding spot as she watched a lizard scurrying past her.

Crowtail spat in frustration as lizards went scurrying. Where had they been hiding, exactly? She heard an impatient voice shouting. Wait, was that Doepaw? She pricked her ears, listening. That certainly was the frustrated voice of her young apprentice. Crowtail froze. Doepaw wasn't helpless, but an irate apprentice running around willy-nilly was a recipe for disaster. Plenty of kits had lost their limbs or lives in an unlucky drop.
And she was being rather rude.
Crowtail darted out of her hiding place. "Doepaw, I'm right here," she said, trying to keep the frustration out of her voice. Yes, Doepaw was being obnoxious, and had definitely scared off all the lizards. But she hadn't even been out of the nursery for a moon. As much as she wanted to, Crowtail was not going to bite her head off.
"If you want to become leader someday, you'll want to avoid running around like a headless fly," She said sternly. "Until you've been out of camp more, you won't know where the drops are."

"Oh my father did tell me about those drops, nasty things, something about great warriors falling to their depths just 'cause they can't pay attention!" She landed a little clumsy next to her mentor her paws burning from the heat and exhaustion, it'd been hard to track her mentor but flying across their territory had given her a feeling of freedom and joy she'd never felt before.
She looked across the cliffs and their sharp dangerous drops, how could their home be so dangerous when it gave them so much protection and strength.
Doepaw looked at her mentor joy and excitement shining in her amber eyes, she couldn't wait for Crowtail to teach her everything he could, "Soooo what's the plan for today! I'm ready to dazzle you with my brilliance and magazines!" the small apprentice beamed at her mentor before rolling over on her back exposing her white tummy, "Or you can tell me about how the Warrior Code was formed you tell the best Warrior Code stories you know, hey you'll make a great grouchy elder someday none of ours right now tell very good stories just about falling cats and a war or something!"
She squinted at the sun shining straight on her eyes, "Boy isn't it hot today, your pelt must be as hot as fire you being all black and stuff."

Crowtail scowled as Doepaw chattered on, seemingly unfazed by her scolding. She'd been hoping for a humbled reaction, maybe an apology for almost getting herself killed. Well, that's not what happened, but it could have.
"Next time you feel like streaking about with a death wish, at least bring along someone more experienced. I won't have you falling to your death before you're even twelve moons." They growled, hoping she'd understand that she was dead serious.
They drew a blank on how to feel about her apprentice's "brilliance and magnificence." Especially with her performance today. Crowtail had been planning on a tour of a good hunting place after the sun had set, but she wasn't particularly keen on working with demanding Doepaw. Well, at least she was enthusiastic. Some apprentices had to be dragged by their tails. But she could easily envision Doepaw's body lying broken among the crags.
Doepaw's enthusiasm successfully put a damper on her irritation. There'd still be nothing spectacular today, what with Doepaw's reckless behavior, but a chore couldn't hurt. She decided to ignore the grouchy elder comment.
"I don't want you acting recklessly. You're an untrained apprentice, you can easily get into trouble. Put the adventures on hold for a few moons, and we'll see." She said with a stern expression.
"I'll show you some places to hunt tomorrow, but for now, we're heading back to camp. I'm sure the elders that you seem to be well acquainted with will have a chore or two."
She turned towards the camp, flinching as the hot rocks burned her paws. Doepaw was right about the heat. "Yes." She said.
"If it's still this hot tomorrow, that will be good news. Lizards are always out with the sun." She hoped the "now come" that she wanted to snap was implied enough.

"I..I.." Doepaw's ears and tailed dropped, Crowtail really seemed angry and maybe he actually cared if she got herself hurt, it looked as if the small she-cat shrunk and she shuffled her paws with shame. "I'm sorry Crowtail.." The apprentice shivered with real fear at the thought of dying, her whimpering was laced with real fear, "I'm sorry I won't do it again I swear."
She had been acting reckless. She'd never been so far from camp and she'd only been able to find Crowtail by his scent, and dumb luck. She could have fallen and hurt herself. Maybe her father's stories were real, and great warriors could fall to their death so easily.
Her paws hurt terribly and one of them was bleeding from where she'd scraped it against a sharp rock, her legs ached and her back hurt. Maybe streaking acrosstheir territory was a stupid thing to do.
Doepaw opened her mouth to argue about doing a chore for the elders but snapped them shut before she said anything stupid.
Crowtail knows what he's doing, I'll trust him and follow him. I'll show him I can be a good apprentice...I'll make him proud.
Doepaw stood up and dipped her head with honest respect for her mentor, "Sure I guess I can grace the elders with my pressence." She mewled trying to get back to being enthusiastic and happy even shaking her pelt in a comical way and striking a bold pose.

Doepaw seemed to understand. Crowtail was glad she wasn't arguing, it made things simpler. "I'm sure they'll be happy to see you." She said. Doepaw's compliance had pacified her for the most part.
"Just ask if them if they need anything. If not, you're free to go."
She paused, glancing at Doepaw as she struck her pose. The little apprentice seemed to be injured.
"Don't go to them while scraped up like that. Have Raventail see those scratches first." As irritated as she felt, Crowtail did not want any harm coming to Doepaw. An infected cut would spell trouble. It would be fairly ridiculous thing for her to fall ill too just because she'd been doing the airheaded things apprentices usually do.

Doepaw glanced at the elders den and wrinkled her nose at the must smell, hopefully they only needed prey or something easier and nothing like removing ticks or Starclan forbid fleas! Mousebile took forever to wash off her paws and the taste was horrid, but she did enjoy listening to their stories and asking questions. Maybe she'd ask them about the time Crowtail was an apprentice, maybe she could use some of the stories to get him off her fur!
Her paw was throbbing and the blazing hot rocks under them didn't help, but they were only scrapes and she was sure she'd be fine at least there was no blood, the apprentice looked at her mentor's paws and tipped her head, "How come your paws aren't all painful and sore like?"

They had almost reached the camp. Doepaw seemed to be holding up well.
She snorted at her apprentice's question. "Because I look where I step... and over time, your paws will toughen up. For now, Raventail probably has something that'll help with any soreness."
(there's not really a lot more that can happen in this thread- would you like a new one? it could be the hunting trip crowtail mentioned, or dated to the current day. a current day thread would involve the wolf on mountainclan territory.)
