Dapplekit sighed loudly from Brightface's side. All the other cats seemed to be sleeping! No matter how quietly she played, they woke up and told her to be quiet. It was really, really boring. Fuzzy kits of varying ages slept around her. Why couldn't they wake up?
She wanted to leave, but had already been scolded once for leaving on her own. Grumpy, Dapplekit squirmed away from her mother's belly, searching for any sign of another cat being away. Several mouselengths away, she spotted something moving. Crawling over the bodies of other cats to reach it, Dapplekit did her best imitation of a hunting crouch, and pounced on the wiggling thing. A leaf! Delighted, Dapplekit turned, searching for another object to "hunt."

Lightningfoot crept out of the dirtplace, feeling rather awkward as he headed back to the warrior's den. Must have just been that dry squirrel I ate, he thought. He cursed that squirrel - he had finally been given a chance to sleep in for a bit this morning and it was wasted by his belly rumbling. At least he felt better now.
He paused, seeing movement at the edge of his vision. It was Dapplekit, pouncing on one of the many leaves that had strayed from the trees above. He twitched his whiskers in amusement as she started looking for something else to pounce on. Fondly, he recalled being that small and rambunctious.
Oh, feathers, he sighed inwardly. I'm already awake.
"Try this," he called. He scooped up a bundle of leaves with his paws, tossing them into the air. "See how many you can catch."

A deep voice came from nearby. Quizzical, Dapplekit left off her search to find the source. A white cat stood nearby. Dapplekit squinted at him. Did she know this cat?
Her gaze dropped to the leaves quickly scattering about the ground. Who cared! He gave her leaves! She gave him a friendly whisker-twitch and lunged at the descending cloud of leaves, scattering them even farther about. She swatted one to the earth, and shot after another. Most had already settled, but she took a leap at the nearest one anyway.
"Do you catch mice like that?" She asked, turning to Lightningfoot. Since he was big, he must be a warrior, like Brightface had explained. Warriors were the ones that caught them the fresh-kill Brightface and Dapplekit's siblings ate.

Lightningfoot twitched his whiskers in amusement, watching Dapplekit leap and claw for the leaves. He flicked his tail at her question.
"Well, mice don't fall from the sky," Lightningfoot replied.
He dropped into the hunting crouch, spying a leaf. "We catch mice like this," he meowed. He gathered power in his haunches, and with a growl he leaped and pinned the leaf into the earth with his claws. He held up what remained of the leaf with his claws.

Dustfeather purred softly as she watched Dapplekit play with Lightingfoot, Aww they're so adorable! I bet Lightingfoot would make great father, and Darkeye's pretty lucky to have him! As she watched the two with bright and amused stare, she herself was tempted to maybe even bat at the leaves. With one her long-limbs, she pawed at a leaf. One thing that was great about Leaf-Fall was well the falling of leaves, even she couldn't help to play with leaves once and awhile. At least when one was looking, she would feel so embarrassed by attention she would get.

Dapplekit eyed Lightningfoot as he demonstrated a proper crouch. Her eyes widened as he held up the leaf in his claws. She needed to be able to catch things like that!
Puffing up to look as mature as possible (at least, in her eyes) Dapplekit addressed Lightningfoot. "Thank you! I'm going to catch prey like that really soon." He better watch out for her. She was going to rock her apprenticeship! She'd move on from leaves soon. Haphazardly imitating Lightningfoot's hunting crouch, she stalked towards one of the few remaining leaves. Motion nearby caught her eye- another warrior!
She shot forward and made a grab, claws sheathed, at Dustfeather's extended paw. Dapplekit was already an -amazing- hunter!

Back in the nursery, Brightface stirred just slightly. As always, she took a mental count of warm bodies next to her and woke with a start when she only counted three kits. She felt heavy with sleep still as she sat up, careful not to disturb the rest of her litter. Dapplekit was the one that was missing. It's probably fine,[/b] Brightface told herself in her head and yet there was still a nagging worry that something terrible had happened. It vanished like mist in the sun, though, when she poked her head out of the nursery to find Dapplekit playing with Lightningfoot and Dustfeather. It warmed her heart to see them together, though part of her wished that her mate Spiderpelt was there playing as well. She shook her head to get rid of the thought, deciding not to sour the sweet looking moment with the mildly bitter thought.
She slipped out of the nursery and trotted over to the small group. "Dapplekit, you really should ask before you just wander off," she meowed gently. But her daughter appeared to be in good paws so it was hard to really be mad. The queen sat down, batting lightly as a stray leaf. "Are you learning how to pounce?" she asked.[/size]

Dustfeather smiled softly at Dapplekit, "hey Dapplekit, practicing your pouncing skills I see," she really didn't mind kits, she in fact enjoyed being around them. She glanced up, "yeah, she has been practicing how to hunt with Lightingfoot. She let go of the leaf she had been pawing on for Dapplekit to play with it. She flicked away another leaf with her tail.

Success! Dapplekit grappled with Dustfeather's paw for a few moments before rolling away. Whew. What else should she do?
Brightface's gentle voice cut across her train of thought. "I would, but you were all asleep," she said cheekily. Maybe the others would wake up now? Chasing leaves would be a lot more fun with some others.
Her adventure was on the tip of her tongue, but Dustfeather beat her to it. She shot her an injured look, but her gaze dropped to the leaf she flicked. Never mind stories! Her tail shot straight up in the air as she flew at the leaf. She crashed to the ground with it clutched to her chest, hunting crouches forgotten. She took it in her mouth and scurried towards Brightface.
"I caught this. Lightningfoot showed me how to crouch," she explained, dropping the leaf near her mother's face. Her silly mom had missed it all while asleep, she'd have to explain it to her, and her siblings when they woke.

Lightningfoot purred. It seemed like it'd been a while since a kit caused such a stir in the camp - then again, it had been a while since there were so many in the nursery. Dapplekit seemed so strong and confident - whomever was chosen to be her mentor would find her an eager learner, to be sure.
He dipped his head apologetically to Dustfeather. "I ought to go see if Batpaw's awake," he mewed. "He's got a lot of training to catch up on."
Lightningfoot flicked his tail at Dapplekit. "Keep practicing," he urged, turning away. "Show your mother what you've learned." He padded off to go rouse Batpaw for training.
Meanwhile, within the nursery, Daisykit was opening her eyes. It took her a moment longer than normal to focus her vision, and she felt Kestrelkit and Nightkit stirring beside her. There was a strange emptiness nearby and all around, though, and Daisy looked about to see that Brightface and Dapplekit were gone. Nightkit would no doubt take a long time to wake - she always did.
Daisykit wobbled to her paws and padded out of her nest. Her pawsteps were slow and careful - having one blind eye made sensing depth a little harder for the kit, though her other senses worked fine. She spotted her mother and sister playing in the leaves, and all the sleepiness vanished as she trembled with the desire to pounce.
"Can I play?" Daisykit asked. Brightface had taught her that it was always polite to ask before joining a game.
