Lightningfoot pushed himself out of the bramble tunnel, his paws set on the well-worn dirt paths out of camp. He leaped onto one of the nearest tree roots, feeling more comfortable off the dirt tracks where his pawsteps could be easily seen. His white pelt was uncomfortably obvious in the green-and-brown setting, and he was acutely conscious of that.
It's a good thing we're only patrolling, he thought. It's always hard to hunt out here when your pelt is white as snow.
He waited for Rainfall and Bushfire, slightly nervous about leading his first patrol.

Rainfall padded after Lightningfoot. They couldn't think of a time where they'd been on patrol with him before- this might be interesting. They hadn't seen much of the younger cat "in action," so to speak. They felt Bushfire moving close to them. They turned their head slightly to answer her polite question, still watching Lightningfoot.
"Oh, yeah, thanks for asking." They mewed. A beat later, they realized they probably should say something back. "Are you well?" They asked. A little conversation would make the trip to the border short.

Bushfire flicked her ear. "Yes, just a bit hot." She sighed. "I wish the prey was plentiful during the cooler seasons, so we wouldn't have to hunt as much to prepare."
A light breeze ruffled the tree limbs above them. Bushfire felt it lift her fur slightly. She should be thankful for the heat and safety, not complain all the time. Forestclan was well fed and there were no ongoing tensions with other clans. She silently reprimanded herself for making a fuss.

Lightningfoot led the way, setting an easy pace as he leaped from root to root. He kept himself slightly ahead of Rainfall and Bushfire, his ears pricked and alert. Despite the heat, he could hear the scuffling of prey all around, and he even spotted some prints in the dusty earth. Perhaps hunting on the way back wouldn't be too bad - especially with all the water to refresh themselves on the border.
Surefooted, Lightningfoot followed the sound of the stream - the surest and easiest way to get to the OceanClan border.

Bushfire followed quietly behind Lightningfoot. Hearing the stream, she almost wished she was an Oceanclan cat-almost. The cool water would be refreshing on a day like this. But the thought of being soaked through was repulsive. The water would weigh her down, making it impossible to weave between the underbrush.

Rainfall nodded at Bushfire's comment. They didn't feel the need to reply. They chose to watch Lightningfoot lead. Soon, they heard the trickling of the stream that lead to the border. "We're almost there," they mewed, although their companions probably didn't need reminding.
Maybe they'd see OceanClan cats. They should be sending out their own dawn patrol, after all. OceanClan wasn't as hostile as FlameClan, hopefully if there were any cats it wouldn't be as charged. Hopefully they'd pass each other. They focused on watching Lightningfoot as he lead to the border.

The sound of the stream grew louder and closer as it drew nearer to the great fan of streams that touched the ocean and marked the ForestClan-OceanClan boundary. Lightningfoot leaped off of the roots of the trees, knowing that they would soon be thinning out.
"I don't want any trouble with OceanClan," he decided. It was often that they saw an OceanClan patrol crossing the multitude of rivers and streams that fed the ocean, and it was a prime fishing location for them. OceanClan was more peaceful and less inclined to fight than FlameClan, but they were brutishly strong and Lightningfoot didn't want to face that. "If we see them, let's just nod and move on."

Bushfire padded along the stream ahead of Lightningfoot and Rainfall to scout while they scent marked. The banks were soft underfoot, and she flexed her claws into the mud. Birds chirped high in the trees and she watched fish swim to the cover of the rocks when the saw her shadow. She bent down to lap at the stream when she smelled the overwhelming scent of an Oceanclan patrol.

Rainfall agreed with Lightningfoot's wishes. "There's no reason for us to fight," they said. As they reached the border, they saw Bushfire dart off on her own. "Call if you spot anything!" They said, rather unnecessarily. Around them, they heard rustlings of tiny creatures, but none seemed close enough to be worth chasing. They could think about catching a squirrel or two on the way back.
They found a stale scent mark and renewed it. Afterwards, they sniffed the air. There was a fresh OceanClan scent in the air. They couldn't tell whether they had just passed through, or were approaching. Either way, Rainfall had little desire to interact. OceanClan was relatively peaceful overall, but any interaction, especially on a border, always had a chance to escalate.

Lightningfoot pricked his ears. In the distance, heading in the opposite direction he spotted the OceanClan patrol. They had just missed them. OceanClan might not have cause a fight, but Lightningfoot hadn't cared to chance it.
He bent down to take a lap of the cool water, grateful for something to relieve him from the heat. Using his paws, he splashed a little on his fur, getting as close as he dared to the rushing waters. There was a current here - he knew that. It would carry him straight into the ocean, where not even StarClan could help him then.
