The sun finally crawled up over the horizon as Bluestripe left the camp. She still felt exhausted, but the anticipation of a thorough border check burned off her bad mood. She couldn't afford to miss anything because she woke up on the wrong side of the nest. She could hear her two companions close behind. Firetail's chatter broke the silence of early morning.
Alert for any rustle of prey, Bluestripe headed to the border.

"So, think we'll see any ForestClan warriors lurking about?" Firetail wondered. He was keeping his voice down as far as possible - loud enough for his companions to hear, but quiet enough so that it didn't carry across the open plains of their territory. He padded around (or hopped over) the old twigs and debris from the fire that raged long, long ago.
Before them it was obvious that the twisting, massive trees of ForestClan were gradually invading their territory. Behind them their territory was a wasteland of broken sticks and long gray-green grass, but by ForestClan's border sprouts were shooting up from the ashen dirt, glowing green in the sunlight.

Darkheart nodded her head. "ForestClan will probably have their dawn patrol out too," She mewed. She looked around the gaint trees. It surpised her that one time her ancestors padded through the great forest.I don't know how ForestClan stays all cooped up by these trees... She thought. She loved the feeling of the sun on her fur and in the open air.

"I don't know," Bluestripe said darkly, in response to Firetail's comment. She glared at the treeline, looking a bit silly as there was nothing there. "If there are any, they better stay on their side of the border, or they'll be crawling back to Foxstar missing their ears." She glanced back as Darkheart spoke, nodding. That was an intelligent observation by her clanmate.
"Keep an eye on them if we do see any," she told her two companions. "I wouldn't expect them to be up to any funny business unless it's leafbare, but if we don't look alert they may think we're vulnerable, and while we're completely capable of handling them... it's better to avoid conflict." She entered into their small, growing section of woods with a flick of her tail. Ahead, she scented their own border markings. So far, no ForestClan cats. She renewed a mark that smelled a bit stale, then prodded around, making sure there were no old scents.

FlameClan:
Firetail was nodding along to Bluestripe's words. He'd heard tales as a kit of how ForestClan often tried taking territory from ForestClan, under the guise of bringing the two Clans back together again. But even though FlameClan had had help in OceanClan then, they were strong enough to stand on their own. ForestClan often argued that the trees that were growing on FlameClan's territory were theirs! He took in his surroundings as they walked, keeping a keen eye on the thick forest of ForestClan territory. Who knew what was lurking there, hiding between those twisted, gnarled roots?
ForestClan:
"So, we're going to the FlameClan border?" Dovepaw mewed chipperly. "Do you think we'll see FlameClan cats?"
Dovepaw was doing her best to walk step-for-step with her mentor, Foxstar. It was her first patrol with him, outside of a brisk walk to see the territory, and she was eager and enthusiastic. She ignored her sore paws and pressed on, trotting ahead of Foxstar. She could see where the trees broke apart, ending suddenly and abruptly where they touched FlameClan territory.
Her paws kicked up dirt and dust as she plodded ahead, ears pricked and whiskers twitching inquisitively. Were there really FlameClan cats there? She just couldn't wait to meet them!

ForestClan
Foxstar purred at his apprentice's eagerness. "Yes, we are. We will be renewing the scents," Foxstar mewed, quickly catching up to Dovepaw. "You seem very interested in FlameClan," He mewed. "I was too on my first patrol. I think every cat is." He added, purring. "You will probably meet some FlameClan warriors, but I don't think they'll pick on a fight with us." He stopped, flicking his tail in front of Dovepaw, indicating her to stop. "We're at the border," he whispered to her. He tasted the air and the stale scent of FlameClan came to him. "The dawn patrol hasn't arrived yet," he declared, his ears flicking. He tasted the air again for cats, and he smelled a couple of cats heading their way.
FlameClan
Darkheart gazed at the huge, green trees in awe. The trees on FlameClan's territory were dead and gray, while these trees were vibrant and full of life. The singing of birds filled the air while a breeze rustled the leaves. It was quite peaceful actually, but there was one problem- she wasn't free. She still couldn't believe that some cats actually liked living under the trees all the time. She returned her attention to the patrol as the started to approach the border.

Bluestripe:
Far ahead, she heard a high chirping voice. She narrowed her eyes. Well, that certainly wasn't the voice of a vicious ForestClan warrior intent on stealing her home. She needed to relax. "Hold on" she mewed quietly to her two companions, flicking her tail in a signal to halt. The border was right ahead of them anyhow. ForestClan might be greedy and untrustworthy, but she wasn't going to ever be at their level. She didn't want it to look like they were ready to trespass. She discreetly reinforced a marking, then signaled to walk along the border.
She spotted a small group ahead, three ForestClan cats. One was obviously much younger than the others. She inhaled. Hold on, was that Foxstar himself? She paused. It was indeed. He wasn't so bad as a leader, but she wasn't ready to forgive the raids she'd experienced in her younger days. A larger warrior lagged behind them, visibly uncomfortable. A kit, most likely an apprentice, bounced at Foxstar's heels.
This was a good a time as any to show FlameClan's strength in a peaceful manner. Bluestripe squared her shoulders and meowed to the other patrol. "Greetings, Foxstar," she meowed. She was quite unsure of what else to say. Her gaze trailed to the excited ball of fluff. Perhaps she was the new apprentice announced just a few gatherings ago.
Rainfall:
Rainfall dutifully plodded a pace behind Dovepaw and Foxstar. It was quite an honor to go on patrol with their leader... but it was a tad bit early for them. They tried to yawn discreetly, but failed quite grandly. The managed to stifle more yawns as they drew close to the border. Dovepaw was chattering the whole time. She and her sister were quite the pair. Almost opposites, even. It was hard to notice Dawnpaw when Dovepaw was around. They didn't see much of Dovepaw's sister. They certainly heard a lot from Dovepaw.
They tensed as Foxstar's posture changed. Curious, they padded a few steps forward. Ahead, FlameClan scent abruptly grew strong. Just their luck, they had managed to catch FlameClan dawn patrol. They forced their blanch back down their throat- now was not a time to look nervous. Especially with little Dovepaw around, this couldn't be a hostile encounter. Even so, they flinched at the call of the FlameClan cat ahead.

ForestClan:
Dovepaw looked up at the FlameClan cats in awe. They were so big, even that skinny tom, and they smelled like ash and stone. She was buzzing and bursting with questions to ask - oh, what should she ask first? Should she ask anything? Surely Foxstar wouldn't keep her from asking them something? Dovepaw was always sure that asking questions was a good thing to do.
She crept as close as she dared, her eyes round.
"Hi, I'm Dovepaw!" she chirped. "What're your names?"
FlameClan:
Firetail was on his toes, wary. He knew that if he made a wrong move here, or said the wrong sort of snarky thing, he would get the patrol in trouble - and he didn't have the desire to get that little ball of fluff with the owl-wide eyes hurt.
Yet he didn't expect the apprentice to come right up to the border - nearly crossing it - and ask that question. Firetail threw a glance at Bluestripe, unsure of what to do.

ForestClan
Foxstar shot a warning glance at Dovepaw, before returning his gaze to Bluestripe. "Greetings, Bluestripe," He replied. "I'm sorry about Dovepaw," he added, flicking his tail over her. "This is her first patrol." He looked at Rainfall. "Sorry if we went too far ahead, Rainfall." He mewed. He looked back at the FlameClan cats, His back straight and his muslces tensed.
FlameClan
Darkheart was surprised that Foxstar was in the patrol of ForestClan cats, but she didn't dare to question it. "Hello, Foxstar." She greeted quickly, trying not to sound rude. She glanced at the fuzzy ball of gray fluff. She purred in amusement quietly. The appertince reminded her of herself and Firetail in a way. Her ears pricked at the appertince's greeting. She looked down at Dovepaw's paws and noticed she was a mouselength away from crossing it, but she saw Foxstar's sleek tail infront of her. "Hi, Dovepaw," She mewed. Her eyes widened with relizeation that she might of said the wrong thing. Along with Firetail, she glanced at Bluestripe.

Bluestripe:
Bluestripe tensed as the apprentice scampered up to the border. She wasn't about to start a fight over an apprentice... but she didn't want to let any sort of transgression side. The apprentice stopped just short, thankfully. Her excited mews were frankly adorable. She nodded to Foxstar's quiet apology. "I understand," she said. She addressed Dovepaw. "You're just a few pawsteps short of crossing the border, Dovepaw," she mewed, not unkindly. She noticed her clanmates quizzical looks. She signaled to relax. Buzzardstar would hear about this, of course. Any encounters with ForestClan were notable. A small apprentice making a beginner's mistake was hardly a threat, however. She wondered whether to answer the young cat's question. She was not a friend to ForestClan, but such a young cat... she was a ForestClan kit, but she might learn to respect FlameClan in ways her older peers might not. "My name is Bluestripe. I'm the deputy of FlameClan," she offered. She tried her best to sound neutral. Hopefully the kit would back away from the border.
She really wanted to say more, but it was not her job to train the apprentices of other clans. She noticed Foxstar's tense stature, and shot him a cool look. They were the ones who were always trying to grab their sparse patch of trees, she didn't know what he expected. She wasn't going to claw a kit.
Rainfall:
Rainfall started after Dovepaw as she approached the border, but stopped as she began to speak. They were relieved but nervous. Thankfully, the FlameClan cats did not look angry, although the rough grey one looked noticeably irritated. They hated fighting, but they would very much defend their young, helpless clanmate. They barely heard Foxstar's apology, but nodded dutifully. Their eyes were glued on the cats ahead. None of them seemed hostile, although the deputy was only just short of scolding Dovepaw. Hopefully Foxstar would teach her to keep a better distance from the borders, beyond marking them. Trying not to look nervous, they straightened their posture and stared at Dovepaw, willing her to back away. They didn't want to say anything in the presence of her mentor.
